Marc Chagall; The Maid of Israel, Litho, 1960,

$30,000.00Price

Peso Priced Item.  Here's the provenance on this lithograph.

Reba Dickerson-Hill (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reba_Dickerson-Hill) was gifted this artwork by her agent Sidney Rotham (renowned Appraiser and Gallery owner). He inscribed the back of the framed litho " Marc Chagall, Adam and Eve and the Angel, from Sidney to Reba, 1965".

Sidney was a highly regarded art dealer and appraiser, it is hard to imagine he would have gifted anything but an authentic litho.

There is a pencil inscription on the verso of the litho "viange d' Ismael" (sp?) something in French.

Correctly titled: The Maid of Israel

Marc Chagall Russian (1887–1985)

Date of Work: 1960

Medium: Lithograph

Suite: Illustrations from The Bible

Published by: Mourlot Frères

About the work: In 1930 Art dealer Ambroise Vollard commissioned Marc Chagall to complete an illustrated series of the Bible.  Chagall travelled to Palestine in 1931 and stayed for two months drawing inspiration from the Holy Land sites and the people. “Since my early youth, I have been fascinated by the Bible,” he said, believing it to be “the greatest source of poetry of all time.”

It was a gargantuan task that spanned 25 years.

In all he completed 105 etchings on copperplate showing parables and figures from the Old and New Testament.

Once printed the copperplate was defaced.

The entire suite of etchings was finally completed in 1956.

In 1956 the French Art critic and publisher Teriade brought out a special publication exclusively devoted to Chagall’s The Bible.

For this publication Chagall composed 18 full-page colour lithographs.

For Bible I, he focused on characters from the Old Testament such as the Founding Fathers, The Kings, the Prophets and Angels.

He followed this up four years later in 1960, with Illustrations for The Bible II.

These Lithographs come from those two publications and should not be confused with the many subsequent reproductions.

Lithograph Edition of 6500

Size: 14 in. x 10.5 in. (35.56 cm x 26.67 cm)

Condition, slight loss on the corners from the mounting tape, a light fading where the mat was smaller than the litho.
