Antique Turkoman Engsi Hatchli Rug, 49" by 59"
Peso Priced Item. The Engsi or hatchli rugs woven by the Turkomans were an important part of a young woman's dowry. Resembling a door with panels, these rugs were used to cover the entrance of the yurt (tent) during the wedding celebrations after which they were stored away and only displayed on important occasions. The criss cross designs in each of the four panels are sometimes referred to as 'candelabra'. There are several tribes and weaving techniques among the Turkoman peoples. I attribute this weaving to the Tekke group, known for the tightest weave. This is definitely an antique, dating from around 1900 to 1920. Evenly worn but no holes or other damage. These weavings were never meant to be used on the floor... but they were, once they made it to the western world. 49" by 59" Rare to find an old one in this good of condition!
